Why We Do The Things We Do

Writing a column about me is a frightening thing.

My career as a writer has always required me to tell the stories of others while I remain detached. I would interview the subject and secondary sources, conduct background research and write the article.

If there was ever scrutiny, it was based on a factual mistake, context or a subject challenging a quote.

When I was asked to contribute a column to www.questionablyfabulous.com, the idea intrigued me. I thought it would be an opportunity to stretch myself as a writer. Then it came to actually write something and I got scared to death.

The internet is a vast world where everything is forever digitally archived. The content sleeps in cyberspace just waiting for someone to type a few keystrokes on Google and recall it from the past. I started to get second thoughts, and then I procrastinated.

Finally, I challenged my fears and decided to write about my life. The victories, defeats, lost love and new relationships.

I would like for my column to evolve in time as not only place for me to bear to my soul but a place where readers could find solace and connect with a voice not much different than their own.

In order to start something such as a weekly column, I thought it would be appropriate to begin with the two things that drive our behavior: Love and Acceptance.

Those two words are behind everything that happens in our world.

The desire of a person to gain the love and acceptance of others is connected to how we dress, talk, style our hair, where we live, the automobile we drive and most importantly how we feel about ourselves.

The more friends and family we have the more we feel valued. That need for people to feel accepted is a large aspect of our online universe. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and all the other social networking websites were created to meet this fundamental human need.

It’s important to understand the power of our desire to be loved and accepted.

The fear of being rejected or judged negatively and therefore excluded played a large role in my trepidation to write this column.

I’m intensely aware of the power being loved and accepted.

It’s why I drive a luxury car I can’t afford, paid hundreds of dollars for teeth whitening, bought a fancy cell phone, hired a personal trainer and made just about every decision I have in my three decades on this Earth.

I’m not condemning this overwhelming and almighty emotion of love, I simply want my readers to be aware of it because the content of this website will always come from it.
