As anyone who has gotten married knows, guest lists can be tricky.
My and I have invited SOME close friends of our parents to our wedding because we’ve felt that those people were involved in our upbringing. When we look back on childhood memories my mother’s best friend is in several of them, obviously she should come.
Where it gets tricky is that our parents have looked at this and requested that ALL of their close friends be invited.
While visiting my future in-laws we had dinner with a friend of my future mother-in-law said something about “when she’s at the wedding”… With as much grace as possible I tried to tip toe around the fact that she hadn’t made the cut… My fiancé, on the other hand, was as direct as he always is and said “Mary-Ann, you’re not invited. We had to make the cut somewhere, I hope your feelings aren’t hurt.”
I was a little taken back, and so was she apparently, her response was very snappish “Well if you think my feelings would be hurt you really don’t know me at all! I couldn’t go anyway.” And with that she stormed out of the room.
Right, no hurt feelings…
