Fireman Superman

Last night my husband had the time of his life.  For those of you who do not know him, he loves fire.  He loves playing with it, taunting it, creating and experimenting with it, seeing what it can destroy, seeing what it can improve upon.  He just enjoys everything there is to do with fire.

I, on the other hand, have a terrible fear of fire.  So together we make quite the pair.  The interesting thing is that because of his background (Chemical Engineer) I do tend to trust that he won’t completely destroy our home when playing with his “toys”.  I used to scream with fright every time the blow torch came out – now I don’t overreact so much.  Its only when he is showing off with his friends that I worry, they kinda cause him to go overboard with things…

Anyway, last night on his way home from work Bryan saw a brush fire and slammed on his breaks and came to a screeching halt in his Honda Civic at the side of the highway.  He jumped out and I think if there were a phone booth near by he’d have run in and changed into some tights and a red cape.  Tearing into his trunk he used the only things he had on hand to put out the fire – his gloves.  Nice one.

When he called me to tell me why he was so late he said that he’d put out a brush fire with the blanket in the back and was waiting to give a statement to the fire department. I thought ok, so he saw what, a cigarette get thrown out the window by the car ahead and stomped out a little flame. Right? Wrong. When Bryan got home he was wondering why I wasn’t more impressed and then explained that the fire was the size of two large living rooms. Apparently my Super Husband dug trenches around the fire so that it couldn’t naturally spread and then proceeded to use his gloved hands and boots to squelch the fire. I took one look at him, singed arm hair, smoked / soot covered pants and could immediately smell the fire on him. I started shaking my head in disbelief and then said, “How much did you enjoy that?” and a massive smile spread onto his face. He couldn’t stop talking about it all night!

When the firemen came and saw what he’d done they were so flabbergasted that he told them he put it out with a blanket, like that was more believable than his hands. I think this is exactly something Clark Kent would say after blowing out a huge forest fire “No officers, I simply used my trusty back seat blanket!”

And for the record, we did watch two episodes of Smallville last night just so Bryan could feel a little closer to Clark :)
