And God Said “Let There be Peter Jones”

Welp, I found my mother ship.

Today I was up at 5 am with Bryan getting him ready for his first day of work here in the UK. Last night he picked out what he was going to wear, his new smart (that’s British for handsome) black suit and an olive green dress shirt. Very smashing indeed :) this morning we got a matching tie together for him and I even cooked him breakfast and made coffee. When he left at 6 am I jumped right back in bed but opened the curtains so that once the sun came up, I’d get up too… um, no… that would require that there actually be a sun today!

Nevertheless, I set off with my new raincoat that has an iPod holder in it and set off like a true Londoner. I love my new city! I only nearly got run over twice from forgetting which direction the cards move in. I will learn eventually. Anyway, a nice 10 minute walk to a dry cleaner who fixes shoes to drop off my boots and then another 10 minutes until I reached the AWC (American Women’s Club) who I’ve been told will likely be my lifeline here in London. And boy, did they not let me down! After meeting the ladies who work in the office I discovered that one woman’s husband is working in the same city as my husband and both work in Oil & Gas. Small world! She agreed with our real estate agent who I talked to this morning and with the train conductor I spoke with yesterday, Wimbledon looks like the best area for us. I cannot wait to see it tomorrow.

But I digress, back to Peter Jones! After I paid my membership fee and got all settled with where to find activities and meetings etc on the website I confessed to have one burning question to ask. WHERE CAN I BUY A CURLING IRON? I know, this is one of the silliest questions one could have when moving to a new country… But I can find the answers to most other questions in guide books and online… This mystery of the curling iron (or as I found out yesterday they are more likely to be called curling rods or curling thongs and sometimes styling wands) though has got me stumped! Both women agreed I had to try Peter Jones, and when (gasp) they compared it to my Mecca back home, Target, I knew this was the place for me.

Setting out on foot I got myself a little turned around even with my incognito tiny map… I remained calm and hoped on the nearest Tube stop and went directly to Sloan Square which I knew was where my safe haven lay waiting for me. What a pro I felt like taking the Tube all on my own!

When I got off the Underground I saw something that vaguely reminded me of the old G. Fox building in Hartford, Connecticut where I grew up. I had doubts.

I entered and found a hefty display of curling irons, hair straighteners, hair dryers etc. Trying to walk around with blinders because our temporary housing is SO SMALL, I tried really hard to stay focused.  But I could hear angels singing when I saw the clean walls and bright lights…  I couldn’t help myself… the beautiful stairway called to me… I had to climb…

And so I climbed…

And climbed… And can you see those red signs peeking out? They say “Clearence Bargains” and some said “Priced to Clear” which any shopper in any language means SALE!!! And do you see what that little red sign is hanging above? SHOES!!!

And in one minute, I knew I had found my home.
